Stephen Mander

Stephen Mander, now based in Portugal, has an MA in English Language from the University of Glasgow, Scotland. He started his teaching career in 2002, working at an agricultural high school in Japan before moving back to the UK where he taught primary and secondary learners one-to-one. He took his CELTA in Budapest in 2008, then worked for two years in Slovakia, where he focused on teaching Business and General English to adults as well as the Cambridge Exams. After a brief stint in Syria, he moved to Vietnam and taught primary, secondary and adult students, as well as the IELTS and TOEFL tests. In 2013, he completed his DELTA, then became a tutor on the Trinity DipTESOL before moving to Jordan to become the training lead at the British Council in Amman. While in Jordan, he set up and ran the TYLEC (Teaching Young Learners Extension Certificate) course and trained to be a CELTA tutor. He also trained teachers in public schools and, memorably, prepared a group of displaced teachers to deliver at an English teaching conference in Zaatari refugee camp. Since 2019, he has delivered and run online teacher training courses, including CELTAs, for a variety of organisations, working with teachers in Iraq, Algeria, Senegal, Palestine, Jordan, Ethiopia, Sudan and Nigeria, among others. He has also tutored on MOOCs (Massive Online Open Courses) focused on a range of topics including grammar, pronunciation, managing learners and resources, classroom management and activities for primary learners, climate action and gender in language education and teaching English to refugees and displaced learners.
